TENS of thousands of drivers were caught speeding in Dorset in 2018/19.

In total, 22,716 motorists were nabbed driving above the limit over the course of the year.

However, when compared with other areas nationally, the figure appears low – in West Yorkshire, 181,867 people were caught over the same timeframe.

Just 807 motorists were caught speeding in Wiltshire, however.

Dorset Police counts speeding as one of its 'fatal five' – the five most dangerous behaviours for those behind a wheel.

As reported, Dorset's speediest driver of 2018 hit 127mph – and the top five fastest were all caught on one of three roads.

The fastest motorist was spotted on the A35 Tolpuddle to Puddletown Bypass and two more drivers hit top speeds of 119mph and 120mph on the same stretch of road. The road has a 70mph limit.

The A3049 Dorset Way in Poole also attracted two drivers who hit 120mph. The road is subject to a 50mph limit.

All of the fastest drivers caught by police last year were men. They have an average age of 53.6. The youngest caught was 42, and the oldest was 67.
