One crew from the town's fire station attended the incident following reports that the chimney of a bungalow on Redbridge Lane had caught fire this morning.
A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "One crew from Dorchester attended and on arrival found a chimney alight.
"Crews used a chimney kit, triple extension ladder, a roof ladder, safe working at heights kit, hose reel jet and aerial ladder platform to extinguish the fire."
Safety guidelines for chimneys have now been issued by the fire service, with residents being reminded to sweep chimneys regularly.
