PEOPLE who are struggling with unemployment or financial problems could soon benefit from a new project that's being piloted to help Weymouth residents learn new skills.

A Social Learning Club is being set up by English teacher and Weymouth resident Jason West, who is offering people the opportunity to take part in a free 23-week course, during which time they will be able to get to grips with any subject or skill of their choosing.

The course is being run in partnership with The Lantern charity, which will host the sessions at its Queen Street building.

Mr West - who has also set up an English language school in London - said the course is aimed at helping people who may have struggled during their school years, but who have a passion they want to pursue.

An initial trial run of the project will involve ten people taking part in weekly group sessions, plus online support. During the sessions, Mr West said he will help participants design their own learning schedule and find course materials in order to teach themselves.

Jason West said: "The idea behind this is that many people who struggled with conventional education might find a more informal way more appealing.

"My view is that given some guidance and support anyone can learn anything successfully these days using the internet, at their own pace."

Mr West said there's no limit to what people could learn, because the programme will teach participants how to source their own materials, whether that be videos, online guides or a different format.

"With no prior knowledge, I was able to teach myself how to project manage the renovation of a Victorian terraced house into one that generates most of its own energy," he added.

"If you pursue your passion and become really good at it, chances are you can make it support you financially."

"That can give people the confidence to carry on, maybe go back into formal education, get a job or even start a business."

The sessions will start during the week of January 20, with times to be confirmed.
