Youngsters are invite to join the dance.

Dorset Youth Dance Company (DYD), managed by charitable organisation Activate Performing Arts, is holding auditions for potential new members this weekend to take park in contemporary dance classes.

DYD has been providing training and performing opportunities for young people since 2007, previously through Fish Tank and then Portrait. DYD re-branded and re-launched its youth dance company, now Dorset Youth Dance Company, in September 2016 and has gone from strength to strength.

It relies on funding from local authorities, trusts and patrons to be able to deliver its classes and outreach programme.

Classes are led by Claire Benson, a former member of Motionhouse Dance Theatre.

Classes aim to create a fun, safe and supportive environment for young people to develop, learn and grow in creative contemporary dance technique.

One of the members who recently left to study for a degree in dance said: “I have never been more appreciative of my experience with DYD. It is the perfect balance of high-quality engaging dance practice from teacher Claire Benson, together with the sense of community and trust.”

A parent whose daughter attends classes said: “She loves being a part of DYD, meeting new friends and learning new skills.

"Claire is a great inspiration and her skills, warmth and enthusiasm has been fantastic.”

Auditions will be held this Sunday, January 12 at Martinstown Village Hall: Company 1 (7-11 year olds) Open Class 10am-11am; Company 2 (12-25 year olds) 11am-1pm. Auditions are free to take part in.

Classes are held on Sundays at the same venue and the cost is between £50 and £100 per term depending on the age. Limited bursaries are available.
