TWO workmen got a shock when they were confronted by a police dog after being mistaken for burglars.

The two men had to climb over a wall to finish off some work on a property on Dorchester Road, Weymouth, on their day off yesterday when an onlooker thought they were attempting to break in and called police.

A spokesman for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "Officers attended reports of a possible burglary in progress at a property under renovation on Dorchester Road.

"The caller witnessed two men climb over a wall into the building site and quite rightly called 999.

"Local units arrived on scene within minutes and were supported by collegues from other departments, including PD Blade and his handler.

"The call was made with good intent and two workmen were located on site finishing up some work on their day off.

"It's fair to say the workmen were 'surprised' to see Blade checking out the site!

"Remember to always call 999 if you need to report a crime that is in progress or if someone is in immediate danger. It's always better for us to check it out."
