A FUNDRAISER has been launched to help youngsters in Dorset learn to fly, regardless of their background.

Glider pilot Nick Barnes, 39, from Wool, has set up a Crowdfunder to give young people passionate about flying a foot in the door.

The project is called Help to Fly and aims to offer bursaries of £1,000 to people aged 14 to 18, who would like to learn more about aviation and gain some experience.

Mr Barnes has set himself a fundraising goal of £5,000.

He said Dorset Council has agreed in principle to support the project and donate 50 per cent of the money. However, 25 per cent of the funds need to be raised first.

He said: “Those awarded the bursary will be given the chance to learn how to fly in a two-seat glider or motor glider with the Dorset Gliding Club and experience night and instrument flying from an international airport.

“It’s all about giving youngsters somewhere to go and something to do. If you want to be an airline pilot and can fly a glider then you’re halfway there.

“It’s a great stepping-stone if you want to become a commercial airline pilot.”

There will be visits to Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) to meet student airline pilots and their course instructors.

They will also be able to visit a commercial aircraft maintenance facility and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower.

Mr Barnes added: “Flying really is something for everyone and not just the rich. This project will help prove it. It is wonderful for improving mental and physical health, helping students to become capable and confident pilots, giving them the life skills and opportunities, they might not otherwise get. If you can support, even if it’s only a few pounds, it will make a big difference, helping them to learn about aviation and how to take it further.

“Help me show that gliding and flying are fantastic sports and potential careers for anyone, regardless of personal background.”
