A driver has been fined and given points on his licence following a crash in which a Weymouth man died.

It comes as police reveal they are still searching for another driver who caused the fatal collision on the A35 Puddletown Bypass and received a prison sentence but has yet to be brought to justice.

David Grant-Jones and his wife Heather, from Weymouth, were travelling back from their son's graduation at Portsmouth University on July 14 last year when their Land Rover Freelander was hit head-on by Adrian Wojciechowski’s BMW on the A35 near Bere Regis.

Wojciechowski, who had cannabis in his system over the legal limit, caused the crash at the point where the dual carriageway narrows to become a single lane.

His two passengers, Lukasz Mleczek and Pawel Arnista, were also seriously injured.

Following a week-long trial, from which he was absent, Wojciechowski, 29, of Surrey, was found guilty of death by dangerous driving and three charges of serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was jailed in his absence for 11 years for causing death by dangerous driving. He was jailed for four years each for the three charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, to run concurrently.

Wojciechowski left the UK before the trial began and was believed to be in Poland.

During the trial, a second driver, Thomas Russell, was found not guilty of charges after the prosecution dropped its allegation that he and Wojciechowski had been ‘racing’ shortly before the incident and had been jointly culpable for Mr Grant-Jones’s death.

Russell, 39, of Ferndown, this week appeared at Bournemouth Crown Court in connection with the incident.

He was fined £1,000 and given eight penalty points on his licence after admitting driving a vehicle on a road without due care and attention.

Wojciechowski, pictured below, has still not been found.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "Enquiries are ongoing to locate him. We are liaising with the International Crime Co-ordination Centre (ICCC) to assist with our enquiries."

The ICCC was established to provide "continuity for UK law enforcement" after Brexit.

Speaking after Wojciechowski was convicted, Sergeant Fern Graham, of Dorset Police's traffic unit, said: “The reckless driving of Adrian Wojciechowski has resulted in fatal consequences with a devastating impact on the family of Mr Grant-Jones.

“This case is another sad reminder that any time a driver gets behind the wheel of a car they are in control of a potentially lethal machine and there can be horrible consequences if they are not driving with appropriate care and respect for other road users."
