A PROJECT to restore play equipment remembering a little boy who died from cancer has been launched.

Branden Wayland was diagnosed with cancer when he was just three-years-old. He died two years later in 2009.

He attended Bridport Primary School and next to the early years’ classroom where he was taught, is an area now largely derelict with a sign which reads, ‘Branden’s Trail’.

Co-ordinated by the Bridport Young Persons’ Action Trust (BYPAT) The Branden’s Trail Project seeks to ensure that this little boy is once again remembered through the revitalisation of this memorial.

A sensory garden and therapy trail are being planned but also a calm refuge for those children needing additional support and providing opportunities for thoughtful learning experiences.

The project has been designated a Bridport Rights Respecting town initiative. David Powell of Bridport Rights Respecting said: “It’s so important to create environments where those struggling with life can be helped to find peace and calm. All of us have the right to be protected from harm and the right to feel safe.”

The Living Tree cancer support group and Bridport Gardening Club are also providing support, whilst a number of individuals have also come forward offering help.

Mitch Castle of MiviGroup property maintenance, based in Weymouth, said: “Such a sad story. I own a local building company and we would love to donate some free time to help in any way we can.”

Jess Edmonds-Bayliss, who is due to marry Branden’s oldest brother, Robert, in November is giving the project her support.

She said: “Rob and I would like to help raise some funds. Rob would love to help rebuild the trail.”

With a projected budget of some £3,000, the organisers are almost a third of the way there with donations from Bridport Rotary Club and Bridport Lions Club.

Lucy Paull, president of Bridport Lions Club, said: “Being a student at Bridport primary during Branden’s short time there, I remember it being an extremely sad time for everyone.

“Branden’s Trail was a lovely reminder of Branden and I’m touched Bridport Lions can help to restore it.”
