THE Chesil Sailing Trust will present a commemorative musical evening to mark 500 years since Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the world.

Held at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy, the event will take place on Friday, March 20, from 7.30pm.

In August 1519, the Portuguese adventurer set out to be the first person to circumnavigate the world. Magellan embarked on the voyage with five ships and 280 men, but just one ship and 18 men returned. The voyage took three years and 28 days.

Magellan himself was killed en route, in a battle at Mactan Island on April 27, 1521.

Poole-based songwriter, musician and composer Bob Whitley will join forces with cellist Lee Mackenzie to pay homage to this extraordinary journey. Dressed in 16th century sailor's costumes, the duo will transport audiences back to this era of great adventure.

Proceeds from the night will go towards The Chesil Sailing Trust, a Dorset-based charity enabling young disadvantaged or disabled individuals to enjoy the thrills of sailing and other watersports.

Tickets are £12 and can be bought from the sailing academy by calling 01305 866000 or emailing reception@wpnsa.org.uk
