POLICE have issued a stern warning to drivers after a man was taken into custody when he initially failed an alcohol-breath test.

A driver told officers he feared he had "lost everything" after he was taken into custody to conduct a further test.

While on duty at Wool, officers pulled over a vehicle on Worgret Road near Wareham at around 6.25pm on Wednesday.

Police said that the driver smelt of alcohol, and he did admit to having had had "a couple of pints" earlier in the afternoon .

A spokesman said: "Last night we were in Wool following complaints regarding vehicles driving inappropriately in the village.

"At approximately 6pm a vehicle came to our attention - while speaking to the male he smelt strongly of alcohol, he admitted to having a couple pints in a pub in Wool across the afternoon.

"While conducting a breath test he stated: 'you have got me, when I saw the blue lights coming up behind I knew it was for me and it was my time'

"As expected the driver failed the breath test and was taken into Weymouth custody."

However, when the man was tested at the station with the Intoxilyzer machine, he only blew readings of 28/27.

The legal drink-drive limit in England and Wales is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

As a result, no further action was taken against the man, but police are warning people not to risk exceeding the limit and driving.

The police spokesman said: "While the results were pending from the machine the driver was incredibly nervous with his fingers crossed - he said 'if I’m over I’ve lost everything'.

"Why risk it? It could be you next... this was a massive wake up call for this driver but could of been so different."
