A STUDENT at Bournemouth University (BU) has tested positive for coronavirus, the university has confirmed.

The student is one of three people confirmed to have tested positive in Dorset.

The student is currently self-isolating.

The university says the person had come into contact with the virus through another individual based in the UK but not at the university.

A statement from BU said: “The student informed us of being tested after coming into contact with the virus through another individual based in the UK, not at the university.

“The student followed Public Health England (PHE) advice and self-isolated pending the results of the test. We are supporting the student to ensure they have everything they need to recover quickly from the illness.”

“PHE has advised that the risk to our students, staff and visitors remains low. The university remains open and continues to operate normally. We will continue to work with partners to ensure our response is aligned to national advice and guidance.

“We ask all staff and students to continue to follow Government and PHE advice, washing hands regularly, and use the 111 coronavirus service if you begin to develop symptoms.”

A gym has also confirmed that a member has been ‘diagnosed with coronavirus’.

An email sent to members of The Gym Poole, which operates in a unit in Nuffield Industrial Estate, on Sunday evening said the facility would be closed for a deep clean.

The email to gym members said: “Unfortunately, we have been made aware that a member of The Gym Poole has been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Your welfare is of the utmost priority to us, so we have taken the decision to close the gym temporarily.”

And a member of staff at Clarks shoe shop in Poole has also tested positive.

The chain confirmed the employee of the store in the Dolphin Shopping Centre had been in self-quarantine and is now receiving the appropriate care.

The store is closed today with a sign on the windows saying: “Due to unforeseen circumstance the store will be closed until further notice. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

A spokesperson for Clarks said the Poole store is undergoing a clean of all areas and it is expected to reopen tomorrow (Tuesday).

As of Monday morning, Public Health England had confirmed that there were three confirmed cases of coronavirus in Dorset.

The Clarks spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Clarks is currently taking advice from Public Health England regarding an individual at our Poole store.

“Following a period of self-quarantine, the employee has tested positive for Coronavirus, and is now receiving the appropriate care.

“Public Health England has advised that given the employee displayed no symptoms during their short time in store, that there is currently no concern for our store employees or customers. However, should any members of the public show symptoms, they should follow the advice of Public Health England and contact NHS-UK by dialling 111.

“Our priority remains to protect the welfare of all Clarks employees, our customers and the public. As per guidance from Public Health England we are currently cleaning all areas of the Poole store and can confirm the store will be reopen to the public tomorrow (Tuesday 10th March).

“As a business we have introduced many measures to protect the health of both the public and employees in line with and in addition to current government advice.”
