South Dorset's MP has backed calls from the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) for a simplified tax system for rural businesses.

The CLA has called on the Treasury to introduce a simplified tax system ahead of the 2020 budget as a part of the organisation's Rural Powerhouse initiative.

It proposes that there be one set of tax rules for business activities by entrepreneurial farmers, which would be managed as one economic unit.

South Dorset MP Richard Drax voiced his support for the proposal.

He said: "I am entirely supportive of a more simplified tax system for farmers. I think I am right in saying we have one of the most complicated tax systems in the world. Farmers in particular are vulnerable to that. Many do not have access to broadband.

"I would say that one of the best things we should do is get broadband out to all farmers. I think the business rates need a huge review. A simplification of the tax system is something that people in this party have argued for for a while."

CLA president Mark Bridgeman said: "The proposal for the creation of a ‘Rural Business Unit’ will allow greater freedom of investment within rural businesses leading to productivity growth and more tax paid to the Exchequer, more income available for environmental protection and conservation, and more jobs to local communities.

"The administration of our proposed system would be a simplification, saving time both for HM Revenue and Customs and for rural businesses.

"The change is considered necessary, particularly in light of changes to agriculture post-Brexit."

Mr Bridgeman added: "Many farmers are looking to diversify their business to protect themselves from uncertain trading conditions. Government should enable and encourage farmers to take action by making it as easy as possible to adapt their business model.

"The CLA is encouraging MPs to write to the Treasury in support of the proposals, many of whom promised to champion the rural economy during the General Election."

The 2020 budget is due to be delivered today. It will be the first budget delivered by Chancellor Rishi Sunak, who took over the role during February's cabinet reshuffle.
