Touching tributes have been paid to a loving husband and kiosk owner who has died.

John David Grundell passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, aged 81.

Mr Grundell was known locally for co-owning Margaret’s kiosk at West Bay with his wife Margaret, which the pair ran together for more than 48 years, serving ice-creams and other treats to holidaymakers and residents alike.

Margaret Grundell said: “After nearly 58 years of marriage I miss my dear John terribly. My family and I are absolutely overwhelmed by the hundreds of messages on social media and cards we have received from people expressing their sorrow and concern. Every day I hear from someone else who has known John and remembers him with affection.”

The Reverend Philip Ringer said: “I first became friendly with John and Margaret 12 years ago when I moved to Bridport. They were always willing to talk and to listen to my stories. John was a friendly man who had his own fund of stories to share. I remember 10 years ago taking the Bishop and Archdeacon of Sherborne to the kiosk late one evening after a baptism in the sea for a warming cup of coffee. Three years ago, after John had suffered sepsis, he was returned to full mobility by two physiotherapists from Bridport Community Hospital. It was a real treat to see him up and about and returned to his rightful place at the kiosk. I will miss his friendly smile. It has been a real privilege to have known him.”

A service of thanksgiving will take place at St John’s Church in West Bay on Thursday, March 12 at 2pm.

Donations in memory of John will go towards the Friends of Dorset County Hospital or Bridport Hospital League of Friends, two causes he supported.

A J Wakely and Sons are overseeing his funeral arrangements.
