A SPIRITED university student from Dorchester is offering help to elderly and vulnerable people who are self-isolating due to coronavirus.

Bethan Miller, 21, is back home in the county town for a month-long end of term break and is willing to help with posting letters, grocery shopping – or even just lending a supportive ear to anyone who's feeling scared and alone.

"I'm just trying to prevent people becoming stuck in a disaster situation with no food, or who are feeling cut off and afraid," said Bethan, who is studying Classics at Cambridge University.

"I'm free all day, every day – I just really want to help the community. I know some people may not want to impose, but really I'm more than happy to help."

Bethan added that although she doesn't personally know anyone who is self-isolating, she is aware there are people in the community who are, and who are feeling scared and alone.

"As I'm just 21, I'd be fine if I caught it - but for older people or those with underlying conditions, the thought of catching coronavirus must be a terrifying prospect.

Dorchester residents who would like support can call Bethan on 07591 089329.

Meanwhile a new project, Dorchester Community Kitchen, will also provide food parcels to vulnerable people in the town and surrounding villages with growing support from volunteers, and a Weymouth woman has started a Facebook group for people to offer help, support and donations.
