A skipper and their dog were left stranded after their boat broke from its moorings and ran aground.

The Portland Bill Coastguard Team was called by a concerned member of the public just after 1am this morning who saw the boat on Hamm Beach.

A spokesman for Portland Bill Coastguard Team said: "Team tasked by NMOC (National Maritime Operations Centre) and assisted by Wyke Coastguard CRT, to a report from a member of the public of a sailing vessel that had broken from its moorings in Portland Harbour and ran aground on Hamm Beach, with one person and a dog on board.

"On arrival the team made contact with the skipper who confirmed his intentions was to wait for the incoming tide and self recover to deeper water. The teams kept watch until the vessel was back afloat and safely into Portland Marina. A welfare check of the skipper was then conducted who confirmed he was safe and well, with only minimal damage to his vessel.

"Both teams then returned to their stations."
