RESTRICTIONS on the number of people attending burials are being put in place in Weymouth to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Weymouth Town Council said it has made the very difficult decision to introduce restrictions to the number of people attending burials at Weymouth, Melcombe and Wyke cemeteries.

From March 25 onwards, the attendance of family and friends at burial services will be restricted to ten people, plus funeral director, staff and officiant.

Weymouth Town Council said the restrictions have been put in place following latest government guidance to limit the spread of Covid-19 and to protect the public and staff operating the critical service,

A Weymouth Town Council spokesman said: "We appreciate that this will be distressing for the bereaved so we will keep the restrictions under active review.

"When the situation improves, the bereaved affected by this restriction will have the opportunity to hold another service at the graveside should they wish."

The council confirmed that funeral directors have been advised of the change and will be in touch with families to help make necessary arrangements.

The restrictions may change dependent upon future government guidance.

Those who are bereaved are being advised to contact their funeral director for further advice.
