POLICE have been forced to send more people home for making non-essential journeys.

Dorset Police's No Excuse team was on patrol yesterday and while most people were observing the rules they still found people unwilling to comply.

A spokesman said: "We have been out and about conducting high visibility vehicle checks across Dorset.

"It's good to see the majority of people following the guidelines. Essential journeys only.

"I reduces the risk of a collision requiring emergency services and reduces the risk of spreading the virus.

"We have, however, had to still turn a few people around, after explaining the above. Hopefully they understand now."

He said some of the excuses given, when people have been stopped miles from their homes, included:

*"I like to shop in Morrison's in Blandford, even though I live in Poole".

* "I'm testing my brakes on the way to Dorchester, even though I live in Bournemouth".

* "I'm delivering a non-essential present to my friend in Weymouth even though I live in Bournemouth".

He added "Speed checks have also been conducted and its good to see the majority of people driving sensibly within the limits.

"In fact in one hour on the A35 no one was stopped.

"Later on one couple, driving home from shopping had to be stopped and reminded of the speed limit.

"Another driver was reminded to keep on top of the safety of his vehicle as his tyre tread was low.

"All in all a good day so thank you.

"We are there working hard as normal, protecting you and the NHS.

"Stay safe, stay indoors."
