A WEYMOUTH resident baked a one-of-a-kind cake to keep NHS workers' spirits up during the fight against coronavirus.

Expert baker Sarah Stevenson - who is also a receptionist at Lanehouse and Wyke Regis GP surgery - used her talents to create a quirky masterpiece of a cake, which depicts an NHS worker in a face mask. She even created a bottle of coveted 'hand sanitiser' - all made from icing.

Mrs Stevenson took one of her cakes into work with her at the doctor's surgery, and another was taken to Weymouth Hospital's urgent care department by a nurse.

Sarah Stevenson, who lives at Wyke Regis, said: "I wanted to put smiles on my hard-working NHS colleagues' faces and had this idea that I thought would perk them up at this very difficult time.

"I wanted to do something a bit different - I made one cake to take into work, and another for Weymouth Hospital so they didn't feel left out.

"I've got a friend who is a nurse at the urgent care department, so she took it with her into work last Friday to share with the team there - I thought a bit of humour would cheer everyone up."

Sarah has been baking for around five years, sharing some of her wild and wonderful creations on social media.

She said each of her NHS cakes took around five hours to make over the course of two days - and her efforts went down a treat with hospital staff.

"They've since been in touch to say it's put a lot of smiles on people's faces," she said.

Sarah has been a receptionist at the practice for around 16 years, initially at the Lanehouse GP surgery, which has now merged with the Wyke Regis practice.

She added, "Work has been very busy with everything that's going on at the moment; my colleagues been working around the clock to help people. The changes being brought in mean there's something different happening here every day.

"I was so pleased to be able to bring a bit of cheer to brighten everyone's day."
