A Weymouth-based trio have made it to the final of the Dorset’s Best Young Band competition.

The band, who go by the name of the Dark Descendants, are all students at All Saints Church of England Academy and were entered into the competition by one of their teachers. They are one of just five artists to reach the finals set to take place at BandStorm, an annual event organised by SoundStorm Music Education Authority.

The three boys met each other late last year, began playing together and found they quickly built up a musical chemistry between them. Since then they have continued to improve playing in a number of pubs and hotels across Weymouth.

The band's drummer, Joe Thorpe, said: “We were really surprised when we found out we were in the final, we were expecting to be done after the second round.

"We'd only been playing for 3 or 4 months so we never expected to be that successful in such a short amount of time.”

The band, consisting of; Joe (drums & vocals), Jamie Slade (guitar, keyboards & vocals) and Roddy Fraser (bass & vocals), cover metal, punk and alternative rock, along with writing and performing their own music.

Despite only forming in November of last year, they have gone from strength to strength and now find themselves with a real chance of winning the whole competition.

Whilst their gigging plans for the summer will potentially be disrupted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, they are looking forward to being back on the gig scene once the lockdown period is over.

Joe said: “We can't really jam together at the moment but we're still keeping in touch with each other. "

"We had some plans for gigs in the summer but its all a bit up in the air now because of what's going on.

"We just want to get back into what we were doing before as quickly as possible.”

BandStorm was originally scheduled to take place on April 29th at Canvas in Bournemouth, but due to current events, has been postponed until later in the year.
