A MAN injured two police officers and a police dog by firing a catapult at them.

The man was driving a Land Rover which was suspected to have been stolen in Dorset before fleeing and attacking officers when cornered.

He was pursued by Wiltshire Police after he crossed the border from Dorset with a female accomplice in the stolen vehicle.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We were alerted by officers in Dorset that a stolen Land Rover Discovery was heading into Wiltshire yesterday morning. 

"At around 10am, the vehicle entered the south of the county and authorisation was given for officers to pursue it. The police helicopter was also scrambled.

"Shortly afterwards, the vehicle came to a halt on Stonehenge Road, Amesbury and a man and a woman got out and fled.

"Officers managed to stop the woman almost immediately. Meanwhile, the man fired a catapult injuring two officers - one in the head and one in the chest.

"Dog Elvis was deployed but was also hit by the catapult before helping officers to stop the man. A taser was also used in the incident to prevent the man getting away.

"A 21-year-old woman from the Salisbury area was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle and taking it without consent.

"A 33-year-old man from the Salisbury area was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, attempted GBH, drug driving, failing to stop and stealing a vehicle.

"Both officers and Police Dog Elvis were not seriously hurt in the incident and have returned to duty.

"The 21-year-old woman has since been released under investigation; the 33-year-old man remains in custody."
