WEYMOUTH Town Council has cancelled the annual US Memorial Day ceremony.

Each year on 25 May, local veterans, association representatives and residents pay their respect for the US personnel who served and died during the Second World War and recognise the many thousands who left the ports at Weymouth for D-Day in 1944. However, this year the ceremony will not be taking place as social distancing guidelines must be followed.

The Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Graham Winter, will be broadcasting a tribute on behalf of the community on Memorial Day.

Cllr Winter said: “We are deeply disappointed not to be able to host a US Memorial Service on Weymouth Seafront because of the coronavirus restrictions.

"The town has a long and proud relationship with the US and allied forces. I look forward to recording a tribute and reinforcing the town’s respect and strong relationship with our American compatriots.”

Cllr Winter would normally lead the ceremony and lay a wreath at the American War Memorial on Weymouth seafront on behalf of the Town Council, followed by wreath laying by veteran associates and the general public.

His tribute along with other information on virtual events in the area will be available on the Weymouth Town Council's Facebook page.
