Children’s charity, Barnado’s, has issued an urgent appeal to Dorset residents to support them through this difficult time.

Barnardo’s is seeking local help in order to help it cope with the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the organisation’s financial standing.

The charity, like many others, has struggled during the lockdown period, and has lost millions due to the closure of shops and cancellations of community events.

In addition to this, Barnardo’s has had to furlough a large number of staff at a time when vulnerable children and young people are in increasing need of support.

As a result of this, Barnardo’s are inviting Dorset residents to form Barnardo’s Helpers Groups (BHGs), thereby acting as local ambassadors for the charity, and helping to raise funds and awareness. All volunteers would receive full support and training.

Sarah Williams, Regional Fundraising Manager at Barnardo’s, said: “In these extraordinary times, we need the public’s support so that we can survive this crisis and continue our essential work for many more years to come.

“By forming a new network of Barnardo’s Helpers Groups today, we can be ready to work together on local fundraising opportunities when the lockdown comes to an end.”

The role of a BHG will include establishing links with local schools, youth groups, sports clubs, businesses and other potential partners to encourage them to support Barnardo’s through numerous sponsored events and collections.

Mrs Williams added: “We hope to attract people of all ages and backgrounds. Some will have a few hours to spare for a good cause, while others will want to develop valuable skills in fundraising or event management.

“It’s a great way for people to have lots of fun and make new friends while supporting one of the UK’s leading charities. Every donation will make a difference.”
