A PROPOSED 'mass gathering' in Weymouth planned by a national anti-lockdown group has been condemned by police and local councillors.

A poster being circulated on social media by 'UK Freedom Movement' is inviting people to 'be part of the largest mass gathering since lockdown.' Events are also being planned in Bournemouth, Dorset Police has said - and residents are now being urged to stay away or risk a £100 fine.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: "We have been made aware of a planned ‘mass gathering’ event in Weymouth and Bournemouth, as well as others elsewhere in the country, which are circulating on social media and are liaising with the local authorities.

"We are reminding individuals of their responsibilities in adhering to current Government advice to stop the infection rate from rising. The Government has prohibited by law all public gatherings of more than two people, except for people from the same household.

"It is vital that everyone continues to act responsibly in public places, as the large majority have done. In keeping the coronavirus under control, we are protecting the NHS and saving lives.

"Anyone not following the Government regulations will be given advice around current social distancing measures and will be dispersed.

"We will continue to use discretion and to engage, explain and encourage. Where necessary, and only as a last resort, our officers can issue fines, which the Government has increased to now start at £100."

Cllr Kate Wheller, representing Wyke and Rodwell on Dorset Council, said: "I find it very worrying.

"We have been extremely fortunate in Dorset, having kept the instances of infection low - however, that has not been entirely luck.

"Our residents have behaved in a very responsible way and I urge them to continue to do so. "It would be such a shame if we were to suffer a spike now. Please do not be tempted to go out and join any sort of mass gathering."

Dorset councillor Louie O'Leary, who represents Weymouth's Littlemoor and Preston ward, said: "I condemn this meeting and urge residents not to attend the protest nor to counter protest and to stay away and leave the police and local authorities to deal with the issue."

Cllr Luke Wakeling, who represents Weymouth East on Weymouth Town Council, said: “The suggested gathering in Weymouth is irresponsible and downright stupid.

“I hope that Dorset Police deal robustly with anyone breaching the government regulations on social distancing.”
