Workers employed by a Portland company who are stuck in Afghanistan are being supplied with care packages.

G3 Systems, an engineering and service company, teamed up with Dike and Son, an independent supermarket in Stalbridge, north Dorset, to give workers a much needed pick-me-up.

The company has 337 personnel stationed across the four main NATO bases in Afghanistan.

These staff are supporting the NATO military mission in the country, mostly providing emergency fire and rescue services on airfields. There is also some personnel providing access control and security service.

As a result of the coronavirusinduced global travel restrictions, regular leave cycles have quickly come to a stop, leaving the staff currently on rotation stuck in Afghanistan until these restrictions loosen.

Along with the international travel ban, there are also increased restrictions on each base, adding to the already intense environment in Afghanistan.

Despite this, G3 Systems say the staff have carried out their duties ably and without complaint.

With staff unable to return home for leave or even purchase some of the basic items they need, due to the strict lockdown in Afghanistan, G3 Systems wanted to make a gesture to support their workers in this difficult situation.

Nick Broom, operations director at G3 Systems, said: “Having met our teams in person in Afghanistan, I cannot commend them enough and I am personally grateful to each and every one of them for the sacrifices they are making.

“This is a small gesture that cannot compensate for the impact of CV-19 on their lives, but it is to let them know they are not forgotten and to assure them we will do everything we can to support them through these difficult times.”

G3 Systems provide equipment and infrastructure solutions, and fire and rescue support services, they have a strong connection to the armed forces and are a designated critical supplier for the MOD.

Dike and Son agreed to provide provisions for the care packages at no cost, despite the current uncertainty for local businesses.
