NONE of the 36 councillors elected to BCP Council have made any comment on the decision of Dominic Cummings to drive 260 miles from his home during the coronavirus lockdown.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service contacted each Conservative member of the council asking for their thoughts on the actions of the senior aide.

But none gave any response.

Mr Cummings has faced calls to resign after it was revealed over the weekend that he had travelled to County Durham during the lockdown period, despite the government’s advice to stay at home.

On Monday he held a press conference and said he “did not regret” his actions and that he believed he had acted “reasonably”

But dozens of Conservative MPs have since called for him to resign, including Sir Robert Syms who represents Poole.

He said a government advisor “should never be the story” and his actions had detracted from key messages.

Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns said he “understood the instincts” of Mr Cummings and hoped the government would be able to move on.

“I’ve received a lot of communications from constituents and I wanted to wait to hear what Dom had to say and as he conceded, I think there will be a lot of people who still disagree with what he did,” he said.

“I feel listening to him that I could understand his instincts as a worried dad but as the prime minister’s already said, this will be a very difficult time for a lot of people who had to make terrible sacrifices to go through this unprecedented national crisis.

“My overriding hope is that the government can get back to focusing on how we can open up the economy safely how we can return to a more normal way of life.”

Separately, each of the 36 Conservative members of BCP Council were contacted by the Local Democracy Reporting Service for their views but none responded.
