A double garage and store with living accommodation above has been agreed for Sunnyside Cottage in Highgate Lane.
Parish councillors had asked for the application to be rejected claiming it was inappropriate in a conservation area, close to listed buildings and would alter the street scene.
But Dorset Council’s conservation officer said the proposal would cause little harm to the conservation area and only have a minor impact on listed buildings, including Wayside Barn which is 16metres away.
The online area planning committee heard that the accommodation over the garage would be used as a home office and to put up visiting family and friends, when needed.
Councillors were told there had been no objections from immediate neighbours and there had been one letter of support from the owners of one of the closest buildings.
