A 74 year-old woman who fell ill while walking at Golden Cap in west Dorset was rescued by coastguards.

Coastguards were called at just after 3pm on Monday, with teams from West Bay and Lyme Regis coastguard stations attending the incident along with paramedics.

Golden Cap is the highest point on the south coast of Britain, although it is not known if the woman was at the very top of the cliff.

Rescuers were able to accurately pinpoint the woman's location using an app called 'What3Words', and found her being cared for by her partner and two off-duty nurses.

Coastguards and paramedics worked together to place her in into a stretcher and then part carried, part rolled down the steep track using the Lyme Regis coastguard's ‘stretcher wheel', which bolts onto the bottom of the stretcher.

A spokesman for West Bay coastguard said: "Once back at the vehicles, the casualty was assisted into the West Bay truck which transported her and the paramedics back to the ambulance which was parked at Langdon Woods.

"She was then left in the expert care of the South Western Ambulance Service for her onward journey to hospital. We wish the casualty a full and speedy recovery.

"Thanks goes out to the two off duty nurses and all those that assisted with this incident."

Residents and visitors are being warned to stay safe on the coast this summer:

Pay attention to local warning signage, stick to marked paths and take note of the tide times

Wear appropriate clothing and make sure you have a method of calling for help

A smart phone location app such as ‘What3Words‘ can also assist the emergency services in getting help to you as quickly as possible

If you do find yourself in difficulty, or if you see something that gives you cause for concern then do not hesitate - dial 999 and ask for the coastguard
