AN injured climber was airlifted to safety after injuring her ankle.

A spokesman for Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team said: "The team was tasked by NMOC (National Maritime Operations Centre) along with our colleagues Wyke Coastguard CRT, to a female climber who had finished her climb and was returning home when she injured her ankle on the cliff path below Westcliff south of Sharpitts quarry.

"The climber was given casualty care by the team and the ankle secured using 'frac strapping'.

"Due to the difficult location, it was decided that the best route of extraction would be by helicopter.

"The Coastguard helicopter Rescue 924 from Newquay was requested and once on scene the casualty was winched to the top of the cliff and into the care of South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, to be taken to DCH for a full assessment.

"We wish the casualty a fast recovery. The teams then stood down and returned to to station."
