A MAJOR rescue operation was launched after a person broke a leg falling down a steep slope.

A spokesman for Lyme Regis Coastguard said: "The team was tasked to assist the ambulance service in the evacuation of a walker with a broken lower leg at Doghouse Hill, Seatown.

"On arrival at the scene, the team administered the initial casualty care and then assisted in transporting the paramedics to the remote location.

"Due to the steep terrain and the nature of the injuries, the OIC (officer in charge) requested the assistance of the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 187 from St Athan in Wales.

"The casualty was stabilised, given pain relief and then her leg was immobilised.

"She was then carefully ‘packaged’ into a stretcher for the flight to Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard said: "On arrival at Seatown, the West Bay vehicle headed off road to join the Lyme Regis team who were assisting the casualty into the helicopter which had just landed on Dog House Hill.

"With the casualty safely on her way to Dorchester Hospital, the West Bay officers assisted with transporting team members and a paramedic off the cliffs and back down to Seatown before returning to station."
