THE Co-op convenience store in Wyke Regis, Weymouth, is to change hands next month.

The Portland Road premises has been sold to another national convenience store operator, and is expected to transfer to the new owner in mid-August.

Meanwhile assurances have been made that all ten members of staff are being given the opportunity to keep their jobs, working under the new employer at the same location.

Confirming the news, Co-op thanked local shoppers for supporting the store but would not go into detail about the reason for the sale.

A Co-op spokesman said: “After careful consideration a decision has been taken to sell our small store on Portland Road, Wyke Regis.

"Our priority has been to safeguard local jobs, and all colleagues have the opportunity to transfer (TUPE) to the new operator when the store is sold next month. We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”

Wyke cllr Kate Wheller said: "I'm very sorry to hear that the Co-op is leaving Wyke where it has had a presence for as long as anyone can remember but I am pleased to hear that the new owners will be retaining the staff, who are all terrific.

"They know their customers, are friendly and certainly the older ones in particular really rely upon them.

"I will certainly miss not having a local Co-op. "
