WEYMOUTH Town Council has announced it has added a second electric vehicle to its fleet as it continues to work towards a goal of carbon neutrality.

The new, environmentally friendly Renault Kangoo Z.E. is being used by the town council’s cleaners, who are now able to maintain the town’s public facilities in a more energy efficient way.

In response to the climate threat, Weymouth Town Council last year declared a climate emergency and made a commitment to make all the council’s activities carbon neutral by 2030.

Carbon neutrality means offsetting ones production of carbon by reducing emissions elsewhere, thus resulting in a net release of zero carbon into the atmosphere.

Cllr David Harris, chairman of the green and clean working group, said: “The new electric vehicle is a very welcome addition to our fleet of vehicles and supports our response to the climate emergency. This is a positive step in the right direction as we work towards our goal of carbon neutrality.”

Cllr David Northam, chairman of the services committee, said: “It’s fantastic news that we have a brand-new electric vehicle that I’m sure will serve the Council for many years to come. This investment sets a good example to the rest of the town and shows our commitment to working in environmentally friendly ways.”
