GROUPS of young people are risking their lives swimming in strong currents in a river in Wareham.

Purbeck Police said people are swimming under a bridge and near a weir at the River Piddle despite warning signs which state: "No swimming, danger, strong current."

A spokesman said: "I have been patrolling at Wareham Common due to ongoing anti-social behaviour. It is a lovely place to go and enjoy a picnic or a swim but please do not swim under the bridge.

"The signs are there for a reason - your safety. We want you all to enjoy yourselves but stay safe and obey signs."

The spokesman said some groups of youths were moved on and said patrols in the area and other anti-social behaviour hotspots will continue.
