The details of more than 60 homes being proposed for part of the Hall & Woodhouse brewery site at Blandford are expected to be approved tomorrow.

Dorset Council’s northern area planning committee is being asked to agree the layout, appearance and landscaping details for the site which already has outline planning consent for up to 63 homes.

The homes and flats will be a mix of converted former brewery buildings and new homes with access from the historic brewery main entrance on Bournemouth Road.

The scheme is the first phases of a project which could eventually result in 180 new homes on the site.

A planning officer report to councillors says the proposals will preserve or enhance the character of the local conservation area.

There have been no objections from any of the statutory consultees including highways and the Environment Agency, although Blandford Town Council objects because it says children from the site will have to cross either the road or the river to get to the nearest large play area.

Blandford St Mary parish council has also objected – about the density of the site, what it says is likely to be a 25-space shortfall on parking spaces and a lack of play areas and a lack of dedicated cycle ways, although Dorset Council says the proposal meet their criteria.

Neighbouring Bryanston parish council has also objected about what it says is a lack of infrastructure and details of how the new homes will link into other housing developments at Dorchester Hill and Lower Bryanston Farm.

Blandford & District Civic Society say they are generally supportive of the proposal.

If approved the first phase will have 23 apartments, 11 two-bed houses and 29 three-bed. None of these will be classed as ‘affordable’ although there are talks underway to try and get some homes for rent within the scheme.
