Dorset market towns could be missing out on a tourism boost as four Tourist Information points remain closed.
The issue has been raised by Dorchester councillor Alistair Chisholm who realised that although the county town library has re-opened after the lockdown, the tourist point within it, has remained shut.
“We are in the school holidays. This is the height of the season. What is going on?” said Cllr Chisholm who works as a tour guide with his own town ghost walks just re-starting after lockdown.
Dorset Council has confirmed that as well as the Dorchester tourist information centre remaining closed, those in Lyme Regis, Sherborne and Wareham will also be shut ‘for the time being.’
“Tourist Information Centre teams are currently helping support the council’s coronavirus response, which is felt to be the best use of the staffing resources available.
“The council as a whole is looking at how we can re-open all services as quickly but as safely as we can. This is likely to mean some changes in how services are provided in the future, but we’ll continue to engage with you as and when we have more information and a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on Dorset’s tourism.
“Your patience and continued support is very much appreciated. Thank you,” said a council statement.
