Lifeboat crews rushed out to Studland Bay after a man severed his finger aboard a yacht.

Both Swanage lifeboats were called out to a 'Mayday' call coming from a yacht in Studland Bay at about 4pm on Monday, August 3.

The skipper of the yacht had caught and severed one of his fingers in one of the yacht’s sail winches and required immediate assistance. The lifeboats launched and made their way to the scene.

A spokesman for Swanage Lifeboat said: "The skipper’s injury was bandaged and immobilised and with some pain relief he, his wife and four children were transferred to the all-weather lifeboat to be taken ashore at the entrance to Poole harbour.

"The casualty was kept comfortable until an ambulance became available. He was then handed in to the care of the ambulance paramedic.

"With the casualties all now safe all that remained was to tow the yacht that had the injured skipper on back to the safety of the RNLI mooring in Swanage Bay. Both lifeboats were then finally able to be rehoused, washed down, sanitised, restocked, refuelled and made ready for the next call."
