DORSET dignitaries took part in a remembrance event for Roma Holocaust Day.
Lord-Lieutenant Angus Campbell and High Sheriff, George Streatfeild(correct) visited Kingston Maurward for the event to honour and remember 2,897 Roma men women and children who were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on August 2 1944 as well as all those who suffered and died in the Holocaust.
The annual event is organised by the charity Kushti Bok, a voice for Gypsies and Travellers of Dorset and beyond. This year due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was by invitation only but it was live streamed.
The Kushti Bok group was formed to provide training opportunities for the traveller community.
Chair Betty Smith-Billington told Mr Streatfeild Roma families face on-going prejudices.
He said: "It seems sad, particularly at this time when there are so many working together in community, that small groups still suffer discrimination. I hope that highlighting the work of Kushti Bok with the Roma families will encourage more equality in Dorset."
