A RELATIONSHIP counselling service has received an award from Dorset's High Sheriff.

Relate Dorset and South Wiltshire, a family counsellor with headquarters in Poundbury, has been presented with a High Sheriff's Community Award in recognition of the work the service has done to support young people at risk of mental trauma during lockdown.

The awards aim to recognise the work communities have done and the value they add to society.

George Streatfeild, Dorset's High Sheriff, has thanked the Relate centre manager, Sian Merriott. He said: "Most people, when I ask them about Relate, assume it is all about marriage guidance.

"Though this is an important part of their work, Sian and her team spend 50 percent of their time working with young people under the age of 25, counselling on family issues, bullying, relationships both at school and home, behaviour, and, increasingly, grooming."

Sian added: "I am extremely proud of the work carried out by the team at Relate during this particularly stressful time, helping people with any relationship issues they may have.

"Being awarded a High Sheriff Community Award in recognition was very much appreciated. It was lovely to meet the High Sheriff and his wife, we were all very impressed that despite the 30 degree heat the High Sheriff wore his regalia!"
