A kite surfer in possible difficulties in the northern entrance to Portland Harbour sparked an emergency response.
Wyke Coastguard CRT were called just before 2.45pm on Friday.
A spokesman for Wyke Coastguard CRT said: "We have a superb vantage point from our station at Bincleaves right above the northern breakwater. A binocular search was conducted from our station to cover both breakwaters and a large part of the bay. Other team members checked the shoreline and areas not visible from the station.
"With nothing found we were about to stand down. A wing foil was spotted drifting just below the station, two team members immediately departed for Ferrybridge to try and locate the owner.
"Just as they arrived Solent CG received a 999 from the owner stating he had lost a wing matching the description. Unfortunately we were not able to reunite him with his property as it was destroyed on the rocks of the breakwater and sank."
