CARS will once again be banned along two Weymouth town centre roads due to an increase in post-lockdown traffic.

During the coronavirus pandemic, a traffic regulation order (TRO) was temporarily lifted to allow cars to drive along St Thomas Street and St Mary Street in the town centre. However, with more motorists returning to the roads post-lockdown, the TRO will once again be in place from Monday.

A Weymouth Town Council spokesperson said: "From Monday September 7 the existing Traffic Regulation Order will be back in force in Weymouth town centre.

"During the Covid-19 pandemic the bottom of St Thomas Street and St Mary Street has been left open to allow the town centre to operate smoothly and this is now stopping. We are seeing more traffic activity in the town centre and will be reinstating the hard closure to safeguard pedestrians.

"The existing Traffic Regulation Order restricts all vehicles entering both pedestrian zones between 10.30am and 5.30pm. Between 5.30pm and 10.30am only taxis and goods vehicles undertaking deliveries/loading can enter the zones. Private vehicles cannot access either street (pedestrian zone) at any time."
