CHANGES could be made to Dorchester’s Fairfield Road and Bridport Road to make them safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

The danger of Fairfield Road, which has no pavement and has two car park access junctions, has been highlighted for improvements since the development of Brewery Square.

“I think we have all walked down there on the way to Brewery Square, dodging car, and they’ve never got the street lighting sorted which we’ve been on about for years,” said Cllr Richard Biggs, “there never seems to be more than one street light working, it’s terrible in winter,” he said.

He said he would also support the proposed cycle lane a section of Bridport Road from Damers Barn near the junction with Damers Road towards the town centre.

Cllr Les Fry said that he would also support moves which encouraged cycling across the town and on other routes which local people used, such as the road from Monkey’s Jump roundabout to Martinstown.

Cllr Andy Canning said he too supported both proposed sites but would also like to see a ‘whole town’ cycling and pedestrian plan, which he said would benefit everyone and help reduce pollution.

“We should be pressing for a bigger plan for the whole town as well as supporting these proposals” he said.

Planning committee chairman Cllr Robin Potter said he believed making all routes suitable for pedestrians and cyclists at the same time, as shared routes, should be a focus – citing the path from London Road to Kingston Maurward College, used by many students to get too and from Dorchester, some cycling with others walking the route to get to and from their studies.
