A climber who got stuck as he made his way up a cliff on Portland sparked a coastguard response.

The climber was on a route known as the Battleship Backcliff on the coast between Weston and Southwell when he got into difficulty on Saturday. He was not injured but was unable to manoeuvre.

Portland Bill Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) was initially called to the incident, and colleagues from the Wyke team were then called in to assist.

It was thought the man would have to be hauled up by a cliff rescue rope team, and all the equipment was set up. However the man managed to lower himself down.

A spokesman for Wyke CRT said: "The climber was stuck at the top of a climb on the lower off bolts of a route on the Battleship Backcliff. Once the climber's position was established from above we were able to set up our rope rescue equipment.

"Luckily the climber managed to free himself and lower back down the route to be escorted back to the top with his climbing partner via an access path safe and well."
