West Bay Discovery Centre’s current exhibition ‘Down the Track’ continues to tell the story of the railway line that ran from Bridport to West Bay.
Ninety years ago on Monday, September 22, 1930, the passenger train service between Bridport and West Bay was quietly withdrawn after 46 years in operation. The freight service continued, but eventually only one train a week ran, and the West Bay line was finally closed to freight traffic on December 3, 1962 and in 1965 the rails were finally removed.
The exhibition includes photos from the history of the line, including the engines and men who worked on it along with various interesting items such as a model of the West Bay station as it would have been at the time of passenger services.
The centre is currently open Tuesdays-Thursdays and Sundays each week from 11-1pm and 2-4pm each day. The exhibition is planned to continue until October 22.
