FIREFIGHTERS were called to a residential area of Weymouth after a fire started in a ditch.

Weymouth Fire Station responded to a report of a blaze in a drainage ditch off Curtis Way within the Curtis Fields housing estate at 8.10pm on Wednesday evening (September 16).

Fire crews hosed down the fire and surrounding area to prevent the blaze from spreading and left the scene at 8.20pm.

A resident in the area said the fire "died down" before firefighters arrived at the scene.

He said: "I came out of my house to put out my bins when I saw the fire, which appeared to be a bonfire. I couldn't quite make it out as it was dark at the time.

"It wasn't too big but also seemed to be under control and didn't look like it was going to spread.

"The fire eventually died down but suddenly a fire engine arrived and firefighters jumped out to deal with the fire.

"It was dealt with quickly and they left shortly after arriving. I am very glad the fire didn't spread as there is a lot of dry grass and land in this area."

A spokeswoman for Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said that the cause of the small fire was not clear.

She said: "We were called to Curtis Way, Weymouth at 8.10pm last night for reports of a fire in the open.

"One crew from Weymouth attended and one hose reel jet was used to deal with the small fire, which was in a drainage ditch.

"The stop message came in at 8.20pm and they left shortly afterwards."
