It now seems inevitable that we will crash out of Europe on January 1st without a deal if Boris Johnson is still in power.

It is inevitable that there will be severe food and medicine shortages in the new year, and I am not aware of any plans for World War 2-style rationing.

While I am not exactly a fan of the monarchy as an institution, I feel that the Queen is more respected than many of our elected politicians.

She should take responsibility and, relying on the loyalty of the armed forces, sack the government and appoint a regent.

The regent’s first priority would be to negotiate temporary arrangements with the EU and France to maintain continuity of supplies.

He or she should then start the process of constitutional reform.
