WORK to remove Weymouth's historic Weymouth Harbour rail lines is causing confusion and traffic jams as road closures began today.

A section of King Street is currently closed from the Esso garage to Kings Junction, with traffic diverted via Weymouth Way – Dorchester Road – Westerhall – The Esplanade – King Street.

The work is causing confused drivers to U-turn at the Esso garage and train station forecourts.

One resident said: "Because of the closures lots of drivers are trying to come down King Street and find nowhere to go so are doing a U-turn on the Esso garage forecourt - not nice.

"They are also doing U-turns in the entrance to Weymouth train station, then returning to The Esplanade, because of bad planning with road signs and lack of knowledge by someone in highways or council."

It is also reported that drivers have been "attempting to turn left into Park Street the wrong way."

Calls have been made for a map of the road works and diversions on local streets to make it clearer for drivers.

Dorset Echo:

Dorset Council has said the current phase of work will last two more days before highways teams move to the next section on Commercial Road.

Commercial road will then be closed in stages, 24 hours a day.
