A FAMILY-run ice cream manufacturer in Dorset has raised more than £3,000 to continue the protection and preservation of the Jurassic Coast.

Purbeck Ice Cream has raised the money from its ‘Jurassic Range’ of flavours, which goes to the Jurassic Coast Trust to help look after the World Heritage site and educate more people about it.

The award-winning ice cream company launched the range – which includes the Dig-A-Saurus, Ammonite Bites, Purbeck Rocks and Skull-Diggery flavours – in 2017. A total of 10p from every tub sold goes to the cause.

Last year, proceeds from the range also sponsored free places for 100 children on guided walks to Dorset’s dinosaur footprints, which are located in the Purbeck village of Worth Matravers.

The Trust hopes to resume these walks in 2021 once government guidelines around public gatherings have been relaxed.

Guy Kerr, of the Jurassic Coast Trust said of the collaboration: “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this milestone of £3,000 raised in donations.

“Support from Purbeck Ice Cream is critical for us in ensuring we can protect the Jurassic Coast so that it retains its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Sadly this year we have not been able to appear at any public events or festivals alongside Purbeck Ice Cream as we usually do, but we hope to resume those appearances in 2021, to speak to more people about our World Heritage Site and its incredible stories.”

Donna White, of Purbeck Ice Cream said: “We are pleased to reach this fundraising milestone, and believe it demonstrates the popularity of our Jurassic Range flavours with the public.

“We believe it’s important to give something back to help protect our local environment, and to inspire people to understand it better and to look after it. Our team are all big fans of the Jurassic Coast and its incredible history, so this collaboration is very close to our hearts.”

The Jurassic Coast is England’s only natural World Heritage Site, comprising 95 miles of the south coast between Orcombe Point in Exmouth and Old Harry Rocks near Swanage.

The Trust’s mission is to enable everyone to have the best possible experience of the site. It is the only organisation with the mandate to encompass the full 95-mile length and 250 million year timescale of the site
