ANTI-pollution campaigners are protesting at the offices of Powerfuel, the company proposing to build a waste incinerator on Portland.

Campaign group 'People Against Pollution' will hold a small socially-distanced action today at Powerfuel's offices in Bridport, urging the energy company 'not to bring any more pollution to Dorset and the world'.

A spokesman for People Against Pollution said: "We are moving to a world which is designing waste out of production, while people are demanding products that produce less waste.

"We are calling for the organisations behind the proposed plant to get out of this dirty business and get into clean wind.

"Create high tech jobs for our local economy and use the safest resource around us - wind energy - which doesn’t pollute the air we breathe for the next 25 to 30 years."

A planning application for the plant was submitted to Dorset Council in September. If the plans are approved, it would see a £100 million Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) built at Portland Port. Powerfuel said the plant will produce enough energy to power around 30,000 homes and provide jobs - although the majority of jobs would be during the construction phase of the site.

A protest was held on Portland last month amid concerns about heavy traffic travelling to and from the site, as well as concerns over emissions from the chimney.
