A CHURCH on Portland has decided to close due to fears regarding the rising number of coronavirus cases on the isle.

Easton Methodist Church (EMC), Reforne, Portland was closed on Sunday, October 25 and will remain closed until at least Sunday, November 8.

A church spokesperson said: "In light of rising numbers of Covid-19 cases on Portland, some amongst our congregation, and availability of stewards to enable safe gathering for worship to happen, particularly tomorrow Sunday 25th October, the EMC stewards together with the minister have decided to close the church for worship with immediate effect.

"We realise that some people will be disappointed with this decision; our overriding concern is for the safe health of the congregation and we feel that the risk of gathering at the present time is not one worth taking.

"This decision will be reviewed on Wednesday, November 4 in the hope that we can meet again for worship on November 8.
