POLICE have kicked off a campaign to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on Dorset roads.

Dorset Police's dedicated No Excuse road safety team has been out trying to detect and seize uninsured vehicles across the county.

'Operation Drive Insured' started on Monday, October 26 and will run until Sunday, November 1. The aim of the nationwide operation is to increase police patrols in the hope of catching more uninsured drivers to get them off our roads.

The week-long campaign was developed by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau in partnership with the National Roads Policing Operations, Intelligence and Investigation committee.

A No Excuse team spokesperson said: "Each year in the UK more than 130 people are killed and 26,000 are left injured in collisions caused by uninsured and untraced drivers, linking to nearly one in every five road traffic collisions.

"Last year 137,410 vehicles were seized for no insurance which equated to one seizure every four minutes.

"We will keep you updated through the week on how we get on."
