The RNLI has issued a warning over 'huge waves' expected this half-term.

The Met Office has forecast patches of heavy rain and strong winds for the rest of the week, with gusts of up to 40mph.

This has prompted the RNLI to warn people visiting the coast of the likely dangerous seas and to advise them to only go to lifeguarded beaches.

A spokesperson said: "Strong winds and big surf mean we been experiencing difficult sea conditions this week, and they are set to become even more dangerous from Wednesday onwards, with most beaches likely being red flagged.

"This swell is hitting in the middle of half term when the coastal area is busy with visitors to the region and locals off school. If you are tempted to enter the water, please go to one of the 27 lifeguarded beaches in the south west, listen to their advice and do not enter the water if the red flag is flying. If there are no flags, there are no lifeguards.

"We would advise anglers, coastal walkers and anyone hoping to watch the surf to do so at a safe distance from the water. If you see anyone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
